Currency Chart Activation This is a highly parameterised exchange rate chart pulling data from a choice of web sites and allowing size, colours and other preferences to be set. Data builds up in a local XML file showing how rates change over time. Requirements: ■ Yahoo! Widget Engine Basic Description: This simple widget displays the current exchange rate of a currency pair. This is a simple currency exchange chart that makes use of our currency widget to display data about the value of a currency pair against another. Requirements: ■ Yahoo! Widget Engine Sample Exchange Rate Chart: The default settings for this chart are: Size is proportional, Values are formatted as a percent of 1.0, Line colour is determined by the exchange rate of the pair and the background colour is determined by the currency codes for the pair. The rates are only fetched once, and then all subsequent updates will be based on that set of values. Notes: This is a very simple currency exchange chart. You will notice that the position of the background rectangle changes each time you re-run the application - this is to support the data fields that we can place on top of the chart. The values are shown as a percent of 1.0. This is a scaling factor that we use to make the chart values readable at the time that they are shown. The default colour scheme for this chart is dark and the default size is one whole time period of the data. The data used to produce this chart is fetched from our server. Requirements: ■ Yahoo! The first version is a standard rate chart. It uses a standard Java Widget Engine and requires a KEYMACRO to be generated. The second version is a Modulo Rate Chart which uses the Big Modulo Math library to display the exponential rate. The modulo version requires a KEYMACRO to be generated but the setup is simpler. A ‘Rate Change’ dialog is shown for both versions. We have done all the testing on this widget, using the standard rate chart. The modulo version was used on our main web site and we got plenty of reports on the performance. A couple of key considerations are that we needed a KEYMACRO built and that we had to use a Server Side Image Host on the web site. If you want to take a look at the code, please email me at peter@cpunkett.com and I will share it. 18. KeyMacro Description: What are Modulo Rate Charts? Modulo rate charts provide a mathematical representation of the rate of change of an exponential process. The rate at any point on the chart is simply the exponential growth rate (in percentage terms) at that point in time. A process can be defined as exponential if it increases or decreases in a geometric progression and we can use this to calculate the rate at which the process will grow or decay. The general rule of modulo rate charts is that the rate of growth or decay at any point on the chart is the exponential growth rate at that point in time modulo the value of the process at that point. In order to visualise this we need to set a process and calculate the rate at a given point on the chart. For example we can define a ‘process’ as a changing process that changes every five minutes. This is easy to do using a simple ‘timer’ on a web page. A quick search on Google for ‘php timer’ will find plenty of examples. 1. Create a file called ‘process.php’ and include the following code. This code will create the process and calculate its rate at 5 minute intervals. What's New in the?
